Quick Tip: Case Presentation Tip #5

Questions. Avoid questions that patients can answer "Yes" or "No." Don't ask a patient, "Do you understand?"–type questions. Ask questions that test a patient's understanding and that make the patient think. Examples:

“What do you think will happen if you don't do anything about it?"

“Which of these three options do you feel will work best for you?”

“Which way are you going on this chart?”

Too often dentists and hygienists just tell patients they need to do this, this, and this, rapid-fire style, throwing terms around like "leaky margins." Then they ask, "Do you understand?" Patients say "Yes" when of course they really do not understand. Many dentists never really get their patients to realize what needs to be done and why it needs to done.
